The Five Keys To Great Mental Health

The five keys to great mental health are sleep, sunlight, exercise, connection with others, and good nutrition.

Great mental health has risen to our collective international awareness. We are all increasingly aware that our mental health is very important to us. Our mental health determines the quality of our relationships, our work, our habits, our fitness, and our whole lives.

So how do we ensure that we have great mental health - or at least a great foundation to our mental health:

  1. Sleep - It all starts with sleep. Deep, long, high quality sleep is crucial to us. It enables our body and mind to rest, relax, and heal. We are able to process through mentally and physically our experiences from the day. It enables our mind to sort through and work through things we have thought about and learned and exxperienced. Great sleep affects how we things, what we notice, how we feel, our mood, our attitude, our responses, actions, and decisions. It all starts with sleep. Sleep well!

  2. Sunlight- we need sunlight. I know we have to be careful with the sun and we should be. But we need sunlight consistently - it has been shown that sunlight is key to us feeling good and having great mental health. I would combine getting your sunlight with a walk because it is a two-for-one bonus for your body, mind, and mental health.

  3. Exercise - our mental health is improved when we move our body. So often we can improve our mind and mental health through our bodies. One of the ways we do that is by regularly moving our body. Walking 30 minutes a day can really improve our mental health in a great way. Consider choosing doing a physical activity you really enjoy. Consistently doing a physical activity that we really enjoy can really benefit not only our bodies but even more importantly our minds and our mental health.

  4. Connection. The longest health study being conducted by Harvard has shown that the most important factor to our long term health and quality of life is our connection with others. High quality relationships and connection with others is so so important to our mental health. Quality meals together, close calls, or video chats - connecting with others while doing activities or hobbies has a great affect on our mental health and overall health.

  5. Good nutrition. What we eat plays a huge role in our mental health because these nutrients are the fuel that power our bodies and our minds. Eating good food enables our bodies and our minds to be in the best condition and state - so we can enjoy great mental health. Finding easy to make solutions for high quality, good food and nutrition is a key component of having great mental and living our best lives now.
